MONROE, La. (AP) - An inmate of Ouachita Correctional Center died during a fight with another inmate Tuesday.

The News-Star reports (https://tnsne.ws/1amRXDC ) 40-year-old William T. Menyweather was booked into the jail on a theft of a motor vehicle charge just hours before the fight.

Warden Patrick Johnson says Menyweather attacked another inmate reportedly housed in the same cell. When deputies entered to separate the two, a deputy was struck in the face and head resulting in her hospitalization.

Deputies eventually subdued Menyweather, who became unresponsive shortly after and was transported to an area hospital. His body was transported to Little Rock, Ark., for autopsy. Initial medical reports indicated the presence of illegal drugs in his system.

The death remains under investigation.
