EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A 33-year-old Everett, Wash., man accused of fatally punching his girlfriend’s small dog on Christmas has been arrested for investigation of felony animal cruelty.

The Daily Herald reports (https://is.gd/GYcyzi ) that police say the 14-pound Cockapoo named Romeo was beaten while the man and his girlfriend were having guests over for a holiday dinner. The girlfriend was on her way home from work.

Witnesses told police that the man grew frustrated when the dog wouldn’t stop begging for food.

A police affidavit says a necropsy showed the dog suffered broken ribs and a torn aorta.

Jonah Brown was arrested Monday and booked into the Snohomish County Jail after police reviewed a veterinarian’s report.
