INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Subzero temperatures and foot-deep snow may be gone, but state highway officials are warning Indiana motorists to watch out for potholes.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says the rise and fall in temperatures following last week’s winter storm was a recipe for instant potholes.
Potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the road and the melting and refreezing weaken the pavement. Heavy highway traffic aggravates the problem.
Highway crews for now are using a cold asphalt patch. When warmer weather returns, they’ll use hot asphalt for a longer-lasting fix.
To report a pothole on a state highway, interstate or U.S. highway in Indiana, call 1-888-WC-INDOT.
