AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - The word “Augusta” has been left out of signs being installed at Georgia Regents University after school officials said the city’s name would be included in them.

Georgia Regents University was created when Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences University were merged. After officials chose Georgia Regents University as the name for the newly consolidated school, some area residents protested that dropping Augusta from the title was an affront to the city and to Augusta State University.

Last summer, officials agreed to use signs reading “Georgia Regents University Augusta” throughout the campus.

University spokesman David Brond told the Augusta Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1fuYXT6) that staff changed direction and decided that using the school’s official name on its gateways “would eliminate confusion for visitors and stay consistent with branding guidelines.”
