CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming’s snowpack is off to a good start this year but experts warn it’s too early to take comfort in the figures.
Statewide, the snowpack is 17 percent above average. Levels in central Wyoming range from 26 to 56 percent of average but that’s tempered by lower snowfall in southwestern Wyoming. The Casper Star-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1cVZ8mb) reports that the snowpack in most of Sweetwater, Uinta and Lincoln counties is 15 percent below average.
State Forester Bill Crapser says it’s too soon to predict where snow levels will be when the weather warms up and wildfire season starts.
Chris Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Riverton, says the current snowpack won’t provide any protection if the weather warms up prematurely.
