AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman say he’s raised $1.7 million during the last six months for his attorney general campaign.

Smitherman said in a statement Monday that he also has nearly $2.1 million in cash on hand.

He hasn’t taken any loans, and received 750 contributions worth an average of $2,400 each. They came from 113 different Texas cities.

Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor and Smitherman is vying with Dallas Republican state Rep. Dan Branch and state Sen. Ken Paxton, R-McKinney, to replace him.

Branch has announced raising $1.9 million in the last six months and has $4.9 million cash on hand. Paxton hasn’t yet released his fundraising totals, which are due to the Texas Ethics Commission on Jan. 15.

The primary is March 4.
