OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A man who was shot by Oakland police after authorities say he robbed another man at gunpoint is set to receive a $125,000 settlement from the city.
The San Francisco Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1hj7wOt ) says the Oakland City Council is expected to approve the payout to Tony Jones this month. Jones filed a $10 million federal civil rights lawsuit against the city after he was shot in the back by Officer Cesar Garcia in February 2012.
Police say Jones had held up a man at gunpoint outside a liquor store and was shot after running from a van police stopped and turning toward Garcia while holding a handgun.
A jury convicted Jones of robbery and a weapons charge. He continues to require medical care.
His attorney, Waukeen McCoy, said the settlement provides come level of closure for Jones.
