JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A Joliet man has argued that he should have a new trial on charges he beat his girlfriend’s 9-month-old baby to death in October 2008.
The Herald-News reports (https://bit.ly/1gb0uuO) Santos Loza will learn next month if he will get a new trial in the death of Kevion Bender. Loza’s attorney argued Friday that Loza deserves a new trial because his defense wasn’t able to fully cross-examine the baby boy’s mother. The attorney also says police interrogation recordings prejudiced jurors.
Loza has denied striking the child while he watching the baby.
Loza was convicted in September. A judge is scheduled to decide March 17 whether he will get a new trial. If denied, Loza will be sentenced in April.
