SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - State lawmakers are being told that barns are crumbling and the 111-year-old Utah State Fair could run out of money by the end of March.

Utah State Fair Director Michael Steele asked a Natural Resources Agriculture and Environmental Quality panel on Friday for a $750,000 infusion to get through the current fiscal year.

Republican state Sen. John Valentine of Orem says he’s distressed by the bailout request.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1fTutrO ) that three agricultural barns were condemned as structurally unsound after last year’s fair.

Utah facilities construction and management chief Josh Haines calls the barns a separate issue from the shortfall Steele reported.

Haines says a $2.5 million allocation to rehabilitate the barns is a top state priority.

Steele says that without the barns there won’t be a fair.
