SUNDERLAND, England (AP) - Hull managed a surprise 2-0 win at 10-man Sunderland to inch away from the Premier League relegation zone on Saturday.

Sunderland was full of confidence after humiliating Newcastle 3-0 in the northern derby last week, while Hull had won just one of its last 11 league matches.

Gus Poyet’s team played almost the entire match with 10 men after Wes Brown was sent off in the fourth minute for a challenge on Shane Long, who was through on goal.

Long nodded home Jake Livermore’s volley 12 minutes later for his second goal in as many matches.

Fellow new signing Nikica Jelavic all but sealed the result shortly after the hour mark, heading in his first Hull goal.

It was Sunderland’s first defeat since New Year’s Day and leaves it provisionally a point above the relegation zone.
