SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A state senator has introduced legislation that would require Californians to buy motor oil with 25 percent biodegradable content.
Sen. Lou Correa, D-Santa Ana, says his bill would protect the environment from petroleum-based oil that spills onto roads and runs into waterways when it rains.
The Orange County Register (https://bit.ly/1e9OLs7 ) reports Senate Bill 916 would require the new formulation of motor oil in state vehicles and state contractors’ vehicles by 2016.
Another provision in the bill would later affect private vehicle owners.
If passed, by 2017 the sale of oil that does not meet the minimum 25 percent standard for biodegradability would be prohibited.
Oil industry insiders tell the newspaper they are concerned about the cost of the environmentally friendly oil and whether such a law would be effective.
