HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Mid-Atlantic electric utilities are preparing for power outages as an icy winter storm approaches the region.
The National Weather Service issued warnings Tuesday for a wide area from western Maryland to northern Delaware, including the suburban counties north of Baltimore and west of Washington.
The weather service says those areas could get a quarter-inch of ice Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Counties in western and northern Maryland could get up to a third of an inch.
Power companies say they expect outages as ice and sleet weigh down lines and branches. Pepco says it has 150 full-time and 450 contract workers available to respond quickly in the Washington area.
Potomac Edison says it’s moving line workers closer to Cumberland to be ready for outages there.
