SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A woman accused of having a sexual relationship with a female student while teaching at a Utah high school has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/Mr3GrX ) 23-year-old Courtney Louise Jarrell pleaded guilty Friday to three counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. The newspaper cites court documents saying prosecutors reduced Jarrell’s felony charges in exchange for her teaching license.
She is set to be sentenced April 8. Prosecutors aren’t expected to seek jail time.
Attorney Kenneth Brown says his client had a consensual relationship with the 17-year-old student of Riverton High School, where Jarrell taught math and coached a girls basketball team. He says Jarrell didn’t use her position to influence the teen.
Prosecutors say the sex acts happened at Jarrell’s house early last year.
She had been charged with rape and forcible sexual abuse.
