LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) - A convicted killer and prison escapee captured in in northern Indiana has refused to waive an extradition hearing that would have allowed authorities to return him to Michigan immediately.
LaPorte County Prosecutor Robert Szilagyi (ZHAH’-leg-ee) says Michigan has 30 days to issue an extradition warrant for Michael David Elliot.
The 40-year-old Elliot is accused of escaping from a Michigan prison Sunday night before being arrested Monday in LaPorte County. Elliot also was arraigned on a count of auto theft and ordered held on $1 million bond.
WSBT-TV reports that as Elliot left the courtroom, he said: “I wasn’t trying to hurt anybody; I just wanted a second chance.” Asked how he escaped, he responded: “quick thinking.”
A message seeking comment was left for Elliot’s public defender, Craig Braje.
