JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - National Elk Refuge managers have determined that available forage on the 25,000-acre preserve near Jackson has declined to levels that warrant supplemental feeding of elk and bison.
Refuge biologists and wildlife managers with the Wyoming Game & Fish Department say the winter feeding program is set to begin Tuesday. Biologists went to forage monitoring sites late last week after a winter storm brought snow and cold temperatures to the area, and most of the evaluated sites were at or were approaching a threshold of 300 pounds of forage per acre.
About 6,000 elk and 600 bison are currently wintering on the refuge.
