FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Schools are closed and plows are back out clearing highways as the latest winter storm smacks Long Island.

The town of Hempstead declared a snow emergency early Monday. The forecast calls for up to 8 inches.

Forecasters said snow could fall at a rate of more than an inch an hour into the early afternoon.



On eastern Long Island, the Suffolk Count Legislature cancelled all scheduled committee meetings for Monday.

Newsday (https://bit.ly/1fox9Lz ) reports that dozens of schools are closed.

Officials reported numerous fender-benders and some isolated road closures.

PSEG Long Island reported minor outages around 10 a.m.

It was monitoring the situation. Heavy wet snow can cause trees and branches to fall onto power lines, leading to outages.
