BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The people who run two homeless shelters in Buffalo say their resources are being strained by the constant severe conditions gripping the region this winter.

The Buffalo City Mission and St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy open their doors to anyone seeking relief from bitter cold temperatures. On Thursday, the shelters declared their 48th “code blue” since November, more than double the number from last winter. The shelters declare a code blue warning whenever temperatures dip below 15 degrees.

Staff member Drew Bernstein tells WIVB-TV (https://bit.ly/1gGQ98T ) that the St. Luke’s shelter has been at or beyond capacity every day. He says the shelter has run out of cots at times, but donations of food, clothing and money from the community have helped to meet the needs of those seeking relief from the cold.
