OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - The North Mississippi Trail Alliance and the DeSoto County Recreational District Commission are in talks about creating a trail for mountain bikers, hikers and runners.

Alliance members told The Commercial Appeal (https://bit.ly/1pDfjeO ) that the first phase of the trail could be open by summer if the talks progress.

The trail would be up to 18 miles long, alliance president Tom Phelps said.

It’s proposed for a privately owned 153-acre tract at Church Road and Craft Road.

Commissioners favor the proposal, though both sides say insurance and lease matters must be worked out.

“It’s positive, from both economic development and recreational standpoints,” said commission chairwoman Peggy Linton, “and so we’re firmly in discussions.”

“There are a lot of moving parts to the development of this trail and we’re anxious to hear more about its economic impact,” said commissioner Ray Laughter.

Phelps said the first of three phases calls for about five miles of relatively flat trail for use by runners and beginning bikers, as well as parking. With all pre-construction details worked out, some work could start next month and be done in three months, he said.

Phase two, which could be finished by the end of the year, envisions an 8- to 10-mile loop with greater elevation changes appealing to experienced bikers and hikers, said Phelps. Phase three would add a three-mile loop with tight turns.

The alliance estimates its financial commitment $148,570. Trail construction costs are estimated at $33,000.

The county’s financial help is being sought to lease the property so it can be made available for public access, Phelps said.

The county is also being asked to pay for labor and materials for parking facilities.
