SHARON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say whiteout conditions are a factor in a multi-vehicle crash near Ann Arbor that left one person dead and others injured.

The Ann Arbor News reports the crash involving a semi happened Thursday morning on M-52 in Washtenaw County’s Sharon Township.

Winds and blowing snow are causing problems for motorists across the state, including the Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Flint and Kalamazoo areas. In the Upper Peninsula, M-28 between Marquette and Munising was shut down Thursday morning.

In western Michigan, the National Weather Service says the area got about 3 inches of snow and the wind chill temperatures were 5 to 10 degrees below zero.

Some school closings are reported. Blowing snow comes as bitterly cold temperatures are expected to last through the weekend.
