RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Several Vermont state employees have received threatening notes in connection with the case of a 2-year-old Poultney girl who died from a skull fracture last week, Rutland police said.
The toddler, Dezirae Sheldon, died Friday two days after she was hospitalized with severe head injuries. Her stepfather, Dennis Duby, is facing a second degree murder charge.
Police say the notes were left on the state workers’ cars in public parking areas and in one case, at a home.
Police didn’t release the contents of the notes but Rutland Police Sgt. Kevin Stevens said the writings were “nasty” and “threatening.”
“It was just a very general type of note with nothing specific in terms of a threat,” Stevens said about the note found on a parked car.
Rutland Police Chief James Baker said his department would bring charges against anyone involved in making the threats.
“The charges could range from stalking to simple assault,” Baker said.
An independent panel plans to investigate the actions of the state Department of Children and Families leading up to the death of Dezirae.
