RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Democratic Party has set a date to work out details on a new executive director after Chairman Randy Voller fired the previous one.

A party spokeswoman confirmed Thursday the 51-member executive council will meet March 9 at Guilford County Democratic Party headquarters in Greensboro.

The state party has been in upheaval since Voller dismissed Executive Director Robert Dempsey earlier this month without publicly giving a reason.

Voller appeared ready to pick national civil rights leader and North Carolina native Benjamin Chavis to succeed Dempsey but backed off as some party activists opposed the choice. It’s unclear whether Chavis is still in the mix.

North Carolina Democrats have struggled to rebound after losing control of the General Assembly in 2010 and the Executive Mansion in 2012.
