JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Lawmakers are able to return money to the general fund. That’s according to Jessica Geary, finance manager with the Legislative Affairs Agency.
In a memo to Legislative Council chairman, Rep. Mike Hawker, Geary said the agency has authority to receive money that was appropriated for a certain use or to accept an outside donation to return that money to the state treasury.
The issue came up at the last council meeting, when Rep. Les Gara said he wanted to return left-over money from his office account to the treasury.
Lawmakers in 2013 had so-called non-accountable plans for office allowances, meaning they administrated their own accounts, with taxes and deductions taken out.
Gara’s office said Thursday that Gara returned the unspent balance of his account, nearly $1,700, to the general fund.
