LACONIA, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire organization that helps low- and moderate-income families become self-sufficient by making housing more affordable is getting a $286,000 federal grant.

The funding, announced by U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, will benefit the Laconia Community Land Trust, which operates in Belmont, Laconia, Meredith, Tilton and Wolfeboro. It focuses on the development of affordable housing opportunities and support programs.

The money is part of the NeighborWorks program, a public nonprofit created by Congress in 1978. Shea-Porter says for every $1 of federal funding, about $45 is generated in the communities it helps.
