GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - After deliberating just 70 minutes, Harrison County jury has found a 50-year-old Gulfport woman guilty for the second time of murder.
Twonia Williams admitted killing 30-year-old Katrina Sargent in 2009 after a dispute over a man.
The jury was charged with deciding whether Williams planned to kill Sargent or shot her in a blind rage. Williams was previously convicted in Sargent’s death, but the Mississippi Supreme Court threw out the decision for faulty jury instructions and a retrial was ordered.
During closing arguments, defense attorney Charlie Stewart argued manslaughter was the right verdict.
But Assistant District Attorney Crosby Parker noted that Williams decided to go to Sargent’s home with a gun, cock the weapon and pull the trigger.
After Thursday’s verdict, Judge Roger Clark sentenced Williams to life in prison.
