A 91-year-old Holocaust survivor died after being hit by a school bus packed with kids in Maryland Wednesday afternoon.
Elia Miranski was using his walker to help cross Columbia Pike at Tech Road in Silver Spring at about 2:20 p.m. when he was struck while crossing the northbound lanes, NBC 4 Washington reported.
He later died at a local hospital.
Fourteen students and two employees from Hammond Middle School in Laurel were on the bus, which was returning from a field trip to the White House. None of them was injured.
Mr. Miranski’s family confirmed that he was a Holocaust survivor, NBC reported. He recorded his life story for the Holocaust Memorial Museum just last year.
Workers nearby told a local ABC affiliate that the intersection is particularly dangerous.
“People are getting hit … accidents here at least monthly,” said Trish Baker.
The accident remains under investigation, which includes interviewing the bus driver, 52-year-old Lori Jean Latimer, and taking a look at traffic-signal sequences at the intersection.
Mr. Miranski’s neighbor told the station that he will be missed.
“How can a 91-year-old guy cross six or seven lanes by himself? That just doesn’t make sense,” Mike Bogale said in the report. “I feel like I miss my father.”
