BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The University of Alabama Birmingham is using a grant to launch a program intended to train teachers in the areas of math, science, engineering and technology.

UAB officials said in a statement Wednesday that a $22.5 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will help the National Math and Science Initiative expand the UTeach teacher preparation program.

The program recruits college students studying math, science, technology and engineering and allows them to earn degrees in their major and a teaching certificate simultaneously.

University officials say they expect the program to help address a shortage of math teachers in the state.

The grant is being split among five universities in several states.
