LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Federal prosecutors argue in court papers that a judge would be wrong to dismiss corruption charges against former Arkansas treasurer Martha Shoffner.

The government on Wednesday filed a response to an earlier motion by Shoffner that asks a judge to throw out 14 bribery and extortion counts, on which she is to be tried starting Monday.

Shoffner is accused of accepting $36,000 to steer state business to a bond dealer. She argued the charges should be tossed because she didn’t impact interstate commerce.

Prosecutors replied that the bonds were from a federal agency and that the bond market affects interstate commerce.

Since her initial indictment, prosecutors have added 10 mail fraud counts that accuse Shoffner of misspending $9,800 from her campaign. She makes a court appearance Thursday on those counts.
