CHICKASHA, Okla. (AP) - Enough evidence exists to try a Grady County man charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of the daughter of a Norman deputy police chief, a judge has ruled.
Special Judge Timothy Brauer set a March 13 arraignment for Steven Thompson after hearing testimony during a preliminary hearing, The Norman Transcript (https://bit.ly/Nx3Mi9 ) reported Wednesday.
Thompson, 27, is accused in the 2013 death of Sara Maisano, the daughter of Norman Deputy Police Chief Jim Maisano. Thompson also faces an assault and battery charge after allegedly beating one of Maisano’s friends, Katie Garner, who was Thompson’s fiancee.
Three witnesses testified during Tuesday’s hearing, including Garner, who said that Thompson struck her repeatedly before he hit Maisano at a home in the town of Amber.
James Luke, Thompson’s cousin, testified about phone conversations he had with Thompson the morning after the incident, saying Thompson allegedly told him he found out his fiancé was cheating on him and shot her girlfriend.
Defense attorney Mitch Solomon asked Garner whether Thompson was upset about her relationship with Maisano, but Garner testified that she couldn’t remember.
Solomon also asked several questions about Garner’s texts to Thompson throughout the day, and asked her if she remembered Thompson telling her not to come home that night, but Garner said she couldn’t remember.
