JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Rep. Sam Kito III has been sworn in as the newest member of the Alaska Legislature.

The Juneau Democrat was appointed by Gov. Sean Parnell to fill the seat left open when Beth Kerttula resigned last month. Kito was among three candidates whose names had been sent to Parnell by the Tongass Democrats for consideration.

Kito was confirmed by House Democrats on Monday night.

On Wednesday, the House Committee on Committees put Kito on the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee, as requested by the minority Democrats.

Kito also will serve as an alternate on the House Education Committee and is expected to fill in on that panel while Rep. Harriet Drummond is away tending to what minority leader Chris Tuck has called a “family medical situation.”
