LAPLACE, La. (AP) - A man was killed and his wife injured in an armed robbery in LaPlace.
WWL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1fS1m4C ) two people have been detained as “persons of interest.”
St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre’s office says the victims were identified as 63-year-old Steve W. Finckbeiner and 58-year-old Constance Finckbeiner, who owned LaPlace Feed and Supply.
WVUE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1mxvCYc ) it happened about 2:36 p.m. Tuesday at the business.
St. John the Baptist Parish deputies arrived at the store to find the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Finckbeiner died on the scene; his wife was taken to an area hospital for treatment. She was said to be conscious and talking. No one else was injured.
“Two individuals were involved and responsible for this crime,” Tregre said.
Two persons of interest were located about one-quarter mile from the scene. Video surveillance was used to help authorities locate them.
Tregre said a cash register was taken from the business.
“I am asking everyone, should they find a cash register on their property or stash anywhere on their property, please do not touch it,” he said. “Contact the sheriff’s office at 911 or call any law enforcement agency. That’s going to be the register that we’re probably looking for in this armed robbery.”
A perimeter was set up around the store shortly after the shooting and lockdowns were in place for about one hour at John L. Ory Communications Arts Magnet School, St. Joan of Arc Catholic and Emily C. Watkins Elementary. They have since been lifted.
“As a precautionary measure, we made sure the schools are safe,” Tregre said. “They were all on lockdown status, but they have all been cleared at this time.”
