BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say charges aren’t likely to be filed against guardians of a kindergartener who accidentally brought a gun to school.

Lt. Sean Edwards says the girl found the gun in her backpack Monday when she tried to retrieve a snack during lunch time.

Police say the girl’s mother was in a car accident Sunday and her aunt put the gun in her backpack while the family was transferring their belongings from the wrecked car.

Edwards says a teacher at Central Park Elementary School called police and authorities are considering the incident an honest mistake.
