PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered flags at public institutions lowered to half-staff Monday in honor of a 22-year-old soldier from Portland who was killed in Afghanistan.
Specialist John A. Pelham was one of two soldiers killed Feb. 12 by small arms fire in Kapisa Province. They were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.
The Oregonian reports that nearly 1,000 people attended Pelham’s funeral on Monday in the Portland suburb of Beaverton.
