SAN DIEGO (AP) - Investigators have identified the U.S. Border Patrol agent who shot and killed a Mexican man after being struck in the head with a large rock near San Diego.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that the agent is Daniel Basinger. He has been an agent for 2½ years.
Investigators say Basinger shot 41-year-old Jesus Flores Cruz, who allegedly threw rocks at the agent from a hillside perch, including one about the size of a basketball. Flores Cruz is suspected of entering the U.S. illegally in a rugged, mountainous area.
The Mexican government has condemned last week’s fatal shooting.
