PHILIPPI, W.Va. (AP) - The Barbour County Commission has appointed an interim sheriff to replace John Hawkins, who resigned after pleading guilty to a fraud charge.
Media outlets report that sheriff’s Lt. Phil Ferguson will serve as interim sheriff until a permanent successor is named. The commission has 30 days to fill the position.
Hawkins pleaded guilty to mail fraud on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Elkins. U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld said Hawkins admitted to staging an automobile accident in April 2013 to receive an insurance payment of nearly $8,300.
