SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Former Sgt. Santiago Erevia clearly remembers the day in Vietnam in 1969 when he and the wounded soldiers he was caring for came under heavy fire.
That day he single-handedly destroyed four enemy bunkers and killed their occupants.
The feat has earned him a belated Medal of Honor.
The San Antonio man is one of 24 veterans from three wars to receive the U.S. military’s highest honor after a congressionally mandated review of minorities who may have been passed over because of long-held prejudices.
The 68-year-old retired postal worker said Saturday he didn’t feel discriminated while on the battlefield. But he wonders if his ethnicity cost him a promotion.
