ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - A Sicily Island farmer has been sentenced to a year in prison for lying to get more than $1.2 million in government farm loans.
U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley, in a news release, says U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell sentenced 45-year-old James Goode Jr. Friday for lying to the Farm Service Agency in order to get the money. Drell also ordered him to pay $322,356 in restitution.
When he pleaded guilty in October, Goode admitted to lying when applying in 2009 for three loans that totaled $1,263,800. Goode didn’t report debts of $357,470 on the applications, which Finley said he was required by law to disclose as it affected his eligibility to receive those loans.
