VIVIAN, La. (AP) - A Vivian woman has been struck and killed by a train while crossing the tracks.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office says 50-year-old Brenda Martin was crossing the tracks at a pedestrian crossing just before 3 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by a southbound Kansas City Southern train.

KSLA-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1eccfNx ) the engineer told deputies that they saw her on the tracks and sounded the train’s whistle, but the woman kept her head down and did not react.

The engineer was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting her.

The train, which was carrying coal, was traveling about 30 miles per hour and had 125 cars and four engines.
