MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) - Leaders of a southwestern Indiana city hope its new riverfront development will help spark interest in the community.
More than 100 people attended grand opening events Thursday for the Mount Vernon development that includes a 56-unit residential building overlooking the Ohio River.
That three-story building includes apartments for senior citizens, six luxury condominiums, a rooftop terrace and nearly 8,000 square feet of retail space. The $9 million project also has park area with an amphitheater and a fountain, giving a new look to the area that had been dominated by grain silos since the 1950s.
Mayor John Tucker told the Evansville Courier & Press that his office has been getting more calls from businesses asking about the 6,500-person city.
“This project is the most exciting of any in decades,” he said. “Everyone working together made it a success.”
Janie McNeil told WEHT-TV said she was glad be moving into one of the apartments and that some of her fondest childhood memories are from time spent along the riverfront in the city about 25 miles west of Evansville
“I’ve been chasing this dream since it was announced in 2010,” she said.
