CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - A state mine-safety officer running for a southern Illinois seat in the state House is on unpaid leave after his campaign disclosed it had accepted a contribution from a mining company.

According to The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale (https://bit.ly/1btzxDI ), Tony Mayville’s campaign in January notified the State Board of Elections that $2,000 from Foresight Energy Services was inadvertently deposited into the campaign’s bank account. It was intended for the local Democratic Party. The campaign said it repaid the party.

Mayville, a Du Bois Democrat, works for the Department of Natural Resources.

DNR spokesman Chris McCloud said Mayville went leave Feb. 10.

Campaign manager Andy Boner declined comment but said Mayville elected to go on leave.

McCloud said the matter has been referred to the Office of the Executive Inspector General.
