HAMMOND, La. (AP) - Hammond officials have big plans to improve the city’s 43 bus stops in the coming years.

The Hammond City Council has agreed for Geaux Benches of Baton Rouge to install benches at all the stops.

City officials will follow that up by installing covers at the bus stops over the next five years.

Lacy Landrum, city grants manager, tells The Daily Star (https://bit.ly/1h4PYpo ) funding for the covers would come through the Federal Transit Administration, for which the city is eligible due to its membership in the Metropolitan Planning Organization, in accordance with city’s plan for the coming years.

“The plan calls for five per year,” she said. “If more funds are available, we could build more.

Funds are 80 percent federal and 20 percent local match.

“We included in our Transportation Improvement Program that we would apply for funds to build five shelters this year once the funds are approved by the Federal Transit Administration,” she said.

Adding the benches will be a great convenience for citizens who need the local transportation, Mayor Mayson Foster said.
