INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis’ police chief says residents shouldn’t be worried about increasing gun violence as long as they stay on the right side of the law.

Chief Rick Hite’s reassurance Friday followed a surge of violence that took seven lives overnight.

Hite says such killings increasingly occur behind closed doors, and the killers and victims know each other. Hite says in most cases, both shooter and victim have criminal records.

The overnight shootings put Indianapolis on track for its most violent year in seven years. Thursday night’s slayings included a quadruple shooting in a home on the city’s south side.

Hite says criminals need to face sentences that show violence won’t be tolerated, and people on track toward violence should be given a chance to turn their lives around.
