ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) - Four separate, multi-inmate fights broke out Thursday at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center and one inmate was injured, a Washington state Corrections Department spokeswoman said.
Prison administrators placed all medium- and minimum-security units at the prison under lockdown, spokeswoman Norah West said. No staff members were hurt.
The injured inmate was treated at a local hospital for injuries West said were not life-threatening.
The first fight occurred around 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the day room of a medium-custody unit, West said. A short time later, three other multi-inmate fights occurred - one in the same medium-security unit, one in another medium-security unit and one in a minimum-security unit.
She didn’t have a total number of inmates involved. No weapons were recovered, she said.
It’s too soon to say what prompted the fights or whether coordinated planning was involved, West said. The inmates who participated have been placed in segregation and will be interviewed by staff investigators.
West said she was not aware of any damage to facilities.
Stafford Creek houses about 2,000 inmates in minimum, medium and maximum custody.
Aberdeen is about 80 miles southwest of Seattle.
