SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - The University of Rhode Island says its first January mini-semester was a great success.

The university reported Thursday that more than 400 students signed up for the two-week term, called the J semester. That’s more than twice the number a university administrator had predicted when plans for that semester were announced last fall.

The mini semester’s offerings included a mix of pre-requisite and general education courses and specialized courses not offered during the regular school year, including some study abroad classes.

A university administrator says URI looks forward to expanding the J semester in the future.
