McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A federal judge in South Texas has sentenced a man to seven and a half years in prison on a drug charge, but also revealed that he had nothing to do with a larger drug conspiracy involving corrupt law enforcement.
U.S. District Judge Randy Crane sentenced Alvaro DeHoyos on Thursday in McAllen on one count of drug possession with intent to sell or distribute. DeHoyos was the first sentenced from a 12-person indictment that included a number of police officers and sheriff’s deputies.
Crane suggested DeHoyos had virtually nothing to do with the larger conspiracy, saying he wrapped marijuana bundles and built hidden smuggling compartments into tractor-trailers.
DeHoyos has already started serving a 10-year federal drug sentence in an unrelated case, so Thursday’s sentence will not add time.
