TOCCOPOLA, Miss. (AP) - People in Toccopola have a new option for heating their homes.

Pontotoc’s Natural Gas Department proposal to build a pipeline to the town and surrounding area has been approved by the state Public Service Commission.

The new pipeline will extend about 10 miles and could add another 150 customers to Pontotoc’s gas service.

Pontotoc Gas expects to break ground on the pipeline in March with an eye to start service this fall.

Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley and local officials made the announcement Wednesday.

Pontotoc Mayor Jeff Stafford said the new natural gas customers would enjoy nearly a four-to-one price advantage over current propane prices for the same number of BTUs.

Pontotoc’s natural gas system supplies some 7,300 customers in Pontotoc and Union counties.
