PHOENIX (AP) - Firefighters say a Phoenix man likely would have died in a house fire had it not been for his neighbors.

Both the Phoenix and Glendale Fire Departments responded to the blaze near 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road just before 1 a.m. and found the man in the front yard.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra says a group of neighbors broke a window and discovered the man unconscious on the floor.

Saavedra says one bystander used an axe to enter through another window and several people helped him outside.

The man suffered significant burn injuries and is in extremely critical condition.

Firefighters say he was home alone when the fire broke out.

Saavedra says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
