INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia State University President Emeritus Hazo W. Carter Jr. has died. He was 67.
The university announced Carter’s death in a statement released late Tuesday night. Details weren’t immediately available.
West Virginia State President Brian O. Hemphill says Carter was a strong advocate of education.
Carter had served as president of West Virginia State from 1987 until 2012. He was the state’s longest serving college president when he retired following a no-confidence vote by faculty. He remained at the Institute school as president emeritus.
During Carter’s tenure, West Virginia State was granted university status and regained its designation as a land-grant institution.
