SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - Sparks officials are celebrating the ground-breaking of a $43 million project to better protect the Reno-Sparks area from flooding.
Members of the city council and the Truckee River Flood Management Authority formally launched the first of three phases of the Truckee River flood project during a ceremony Tuesday near Vista Boulevard and U.S. Interstate 80.
The first phase of the long-awaited redesign costs $9 million and involves realignment of the North Truckee Drain, which collects storm flowing from northern Spanish Springs Valley.
Sparks Mayor Adam Mayberry tells the Reno Gazette-Journal (https://tinyurl.com/pjhtfhz ) the realignment will help reduce flooding of the 2,000-acre industrial area south of I-80 and north of the river. The area previously flooded in 1997 and 2005.
Construction will begin on the west side of Greg Street in Sparks.
