PROVO, Utah (AP) - A 23 year-old Provo woman is in the hospital after spending more than eight hours trapped in a canyon slot Monday night.

KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/M9Fp9a ) that Rebecca Winters was hiking with a group in Canyonlands National Park when she became trapped.

Kassidee Brown of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says a member of the group was trying to help Winters get through a slot with a rope when she let go of the rope, fell 6 feet and broke her ankle.

The group called for search and rescue teams around 1 p.m., and they reached Winters around 6 p.m.

It took rescuers five hours to get Winters out of the canyon. She was helicoptered to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center around 11 p.m.
