EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Eugene’s urban forest has taken a pounding from snow, rain and flooding.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/1b7m9VI ) ice storms that followed snow on the Willamette Valley floor did significant damage to forests in the area.

A rhododendron garden, playground, arboretum and University Park have been closed to cope with the damage.

City spokeswoman Carrie Peterson says it will take weeks to assess the damage, and trees are at further risk from rain-soaked soil.

Wet, loose soil leaves them vulnerable to uprooting.
